Kyoto, the second capitol of Japan (after Nara and
before Tokyo), is inarguably the cultural high point of any Japan trip.
The city became the seat of Japan’s imperial court in 794, after
powerful Buddhist monks in Nara created problems for the imperial
government. Kyoto remained the capital of Japan for over a thousand
years.
