Statia (27 images)
Statia is a small island a few miles of of St.
Maarten. The island has a couple of thousand people who almost all work
at the oil terminal. Statia used to be a hub of the Caribbean slave
trade, and as such at one point was busier than New York. Most of the
original dockyard and fortifications slid underwater 200 years ago due
to an undersea earthquake. They now sit under about 10 feet of water.
The main reason I came was to do some snorkeling on the ruins. There
really isn't much else to do -- there is no entertainment of any kind.
Statia doesn't even have a gift shop.
