Saba (19 images)
I day tripped to Saba, N.A.. Saba is a tiny volcanic island with almost no flat land. The flattest point, called "Flat Point" is home to the Saba airport, which has the shortest runway in the world (1300 ft). The runway is marked with "X"s, to indicate to pilots that it is unsuitable for landing. The Dash-8s have no problem landing here, although it is exciting. For ages the Sabans were told that the could not have a road due to the steepness of the terrain, until a self taught local man and a team of volunteers built the only road between towns (called "The Road", Sabans have a way with names). The island is home to 1500 people, half Creole, half descended from the scotch. Everyone talks with a scotch-Caribbean accent.
Everyone hitchhikes on Saba, since everyone knows everyone else.  Crime is more or less unheard of.  Most of the locals work at either the medical school, construction jobs, or in the small tourist industry.
